Gilded age romance May the Best Duke Win by Paulia Belgado is by the numbers, and this review proves it

The best thing about gilded age romance May the Best Duke Win by Paulia Belgado is the author's note at the beginning, in which Belgado writes about women engineers in the time of robber barons, giving  names and what they invented.  I went into this book thinking it would be deeply specific, which, in my view, is what makes a book great.

Alas, it was not to be.  The book was a by the numbers historical romance, hitting every beat right on schedule:

1.     Outsider (an American, in this case) arrives in London to find a husband.

2.    She must find a husband or she will be married off to someone unsavory.

3.    She has a meet cute with a hot Duke.

4.    But the meet cute is an awkward situation and if they are caught she will be ruined.

5.    The hot Duke makes sure they are not caught.

6.    She is thrown together with the hot Duke at a house party.

7.    The hot Duke does not want to get married so she pursues a different hot Duke who does.

8.    The hot Duke does not understand why she flirts with the different hot Duke and pretends that she does not love engineering.

9.    She is in love with the hot Duke but won't tell him because she needs to get married.

10.    The hot Duke is in love with her but back story blah blah blah does not want to get married.

11.    The hot Duke's mother notices that they love each other.

12.    The heroine gets kidnapped.

13.    She sort of rescues herself just before the hot Duke rescues her.

14.    The hot Duke realizes he can overcome his back story.

15.    They get married.
