Review of perfectly serviceable Netflix romcom Players

 Game poster image

You say Tom Ellis, I say I'm in.  Add in a bunch of other actors who are beautiful even by Hollywood standards (Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayons, Jr..) and, yup, bring on the popcorn.  Players, a Netflix romcom that dropped on Valentine's Day, has all this eye candy and more.

Rodriguez stars as Mack, a sports reporter for a quirky newspaper that is always laying people off -- you know, newspaper, 2024 -- but still manages to employ Mack and her gang of childhood friends, including Wayons' character Adam.  And I do mean gang -- this group constantly runs "plays" on unsuspecting singles at bars, misleading the victims about pretty much everything before one of the gang has sex with them.  (I really hope everyone in this movie uses protection.)

Ellis plays Nick, who Mack is attracted to because he is an adult.  (Rodriguez and Wayons both play characters in their early 30s, ten years younger than their actual ages.)  She believes this because he has matching dishes.  Mack and the gang of miscreants run a long stalkery play on him, and even though he is a world-renowned war reporter who doesn't share restaurant food with others because in his profession he needs to beware of poisoners, he falls for it.

SPOILERS

As the movie goes on, however, Nick is revealed to be a petulant manchild much like Ellis's character in Lucifer.  Mack realizes he is not the man for her.  (Tom Ellis, call me.  I'm available).  Luckily, there was a perfect man right in her own backyard.  Roll credits.
