Modern romance Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall is hilarious and wonderful; follow up Husband Material not so much

I've posted about my love for Alexis Hall here and here.

Boyfriend Material caught me immediately by being very, very funny.  Like, laugh-out-loud-while-you're-alone-in-a-room funny.  My favorite passage:

The plot is a standard fake boyfriends to real boyfriends story.  But as the book continues it becomes less funny and more -- wow.  For most of the book we are following the character growth of first-person narrator hero Luc.  He becomes less of a jerk, more confident, and more accepting of himself.  This growth is helped along by but not entirely caused by his relationship with hero Oliver.

But towards the end of the book there is a massive twist.

SPOILER

Luc had been too self-absorbed to realize it, but Oliver is just as screwed up as Luc is, and needs to go through a character arc of his own.  Oliver is also a main character.  It is really, really well done.

Husband Material begins two years later.  It's that time of life where Luc's and Oliver's friends and coworkers are getting married in droves, and Luc and Oliver decide to follow the pack.

This is probably my least favorite of any of Hall's books that I have read to date, which still puts it in the pretty good category.  While many of Hall's books have a bit of meandering and a bit of preachiness, this book leans into those aspects.  It's short on humor and character growth.

Interesting note:  The third book in the trilogy, Father Material, was supposed to come out in 2025 but has been postponed to 2026.

Note from Jasmine Gold: As the name of this blog indicates, I write erotica. Check out my dark, dystopian novel about naked sex slaves, Mindgames. Your darkest fantasies, with a phenomenal plot and characters you will come to think of as beloved friends. Available on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited  and in paperback.  Or read my book of short stories about hot, consensual sex, The Mature Woman's Guide to Desire, available on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited.
